Crundale, Kent EXCOMMUNICATION
CASE 6 July 1729 - Mary Knott a widow, was excommunicated on the
charge of Contumacy.
Contumacy = the wilfull disobedience of the
authority of the church.
The Parish Records book states "The
judge of the Court by reason of the Misnomer declared the
excommunication void."
She was apparently called Margaret, not
Mary.
The lowest level court was the Archdeacon's Court - with
the local Archdeacon hearing the case cases could then be refered up to
the Commissary Court at Canterbury - presided over by the Commissary
General.
Next above that was the Arches Court at Canterbury
-which had 5 Judges presiding over
cases..
