Wye, Kent Civil Marriages 1654-1657

During the Commonwealth Era during the Civil War, Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarians outlawed marriages in church.
Many Rectors fled their parishes, but where those stayed on, some did undertake illicit weddings according to the
customs of the Church of England in the Parish Church.

For most people, however, their only option was to visit a Justice of the Peace and be married by the J.P.
in a Civil Wedding, with a decalaration, similar to Banns, being posted in the market place of town for some time before the
event was to take place.
In Wye, the busiest JP involved in Weddings was Mr. Robert Wiville Esqr.,[also often referred to as Weevel or Weevil.]
Also Michel Belke and Thomas Scot were noted as JPs at this time, but their lists are not yet located.

The following list was compiled after 1660, during the reign of King Charles II and the marriage restrictions
of the Parliamentarian Era were stopped. Charles ruled that in future all marriages must take place in a
Church of the Church of England, regardless of the faith followed by Bride and Groom. 
Many new Parish Rectors destroyed the lists of civil marriages undertaken by JPs and refused to recognise them.
Wye appears to have embraced civil marriages and the records survive. Some civil marriages have been duplicated in the parish church
register, but not all of them - and there are discrepancies between the two lists. 

As you will see from the parishes of origin, some couples traveled quite a distance, to be married at Wye in front of the JP.

This list uses the Julian Calendar with 25 March being the start of each New Year up to 1751.

"The severall persons here under named were marryed at Wye at the time and dayes resectively
mentioned by Robert Wivill Esqr. Justice of the peace acording to the act then in force; their
severall contracts being published and Certifyed according to the said act."
