Dear Sir, With regard to the Earthworks near the Crown I cannot give you much nformation but in an old History of Wye it states "that no precise date can be given but it is supposed they were formed by the Britons as a defence about the time of Julius Caesars second expedition" I am sorry I cannot get you any further information/ Your Serv Geo. Sutton Hazel Street Map 55 Plan 16 Hastingleigh Parish OS Description: applies to a small district consisting of cottages, Beerhouse & small farms. Situated about 2 miles East of Wye & about 2 miles South East of Crundale. Mr Sutton's corrections read: "Parish Farm = Owned by Sir John Honywood Hassle Street Farm = Owner R.J. Sankey Public House & 2 Cottages = Flint & Company [Brewers of Canterbury] 3 Cottages = Owner A. Sutton There are also 2 Cottages in Hazel street in the Parish of Crundale 1 owned by R.J. A similar form submitted to Messers Flint & Co., Brewers, Canterbury elicited the following response from C.W. Battiscombe: According to the Map "Hazel Street" etc usual way to addressing letter "Hassell". Hazel Adopted as on original plan. See OS form 230 no.11

Form OS231-6 has the following: John Tippen - overseer of Wye Frank Becher - assistant overseer of Crundale Henry Ricketts - Vicar of Crundale All confirming that Hazel Street is known as Hassell Street locally.
