* In 1939 there was a thorough population count, which enabled the issuing of an ID card to everyone. This list in turn
provided the basis for ration cards during and after the war. Each individual was given an ID number, which subsequently
became their NHS number.
For this reason, for anyone who is still alive, or who died overseas, their details have been redacted from view, until proof of death
is submitted to the National Archives by means of an official death certificate. It is due to this that several names have been redacted
and cannot be transcribed into the 1939 list on this website. Those whose details are now disclosed, have been listed.
Because some properties are still redacted - and some were registered in Wye Parish, the population total of 215+ is the approximate
figure for Hastingleigh Parish in 1939.
C.1086- Domesday Book- Hastingleigh had 21 dwellings.
C. 1587- there were 75 communicants (people able to take communion in church)
C.1617- Petition from Hastingleigh seeking relief from payment of gaol and maimed soldiers money, since there are
only 13 households, 5 being poor widows and 8 only paying to the poor rates.
C. 1640- reports show 337 communicants
C.1730- population 216 (source: Genealogical Gazetteer of England)
C.2001- population 221, in 92 dwellings
