He was already enlisted in the Royal Artillery prior to World War 2. He was captured and taken prisoner in North Africa 1942. He was being transferred by cargo vessel to a prison camp in Italy when the boat was attacked and sunk.

Family Notes:

Youngest son of Shirley Arthur Thomas John Norrington (formerly living at the Old Rectory Hastingleigh and on the village WW1 Roll of Honour) and Minnie Jane nee Birchett of Evington Lees, and baptised at Hastingleigh.
His maternal uncle was Harry Percy Birchett -see WW1 Casualty List and is commemorated on the War Memorial

Brother of Lilian, Mable, John, Frederick ,Louis, Harry, George, Sidney, Dorothy and May Norrington. Half brother of Hilda Burchett.

Killed 14 November 1942 on the S.S. Scillin disaster with 787 fellow Allied prisoners of war while being transported from Tripoli, Libya to Italy by the Italians and the vessel was controvertially blown up by a Torpedo attack from a British submarine.

He is named on the Canterbury Civic Memorial.
