Hastingleigh and Elmsted School

"The Punishment Book"

This table lists a fraction of the punishments meted out to pupils as an example of school discipline in the early 1900s.

The ages are not noted in the original book, but have been added where known, to illustrate that caning could and did

happen regardless of the age of the pupil. The majority of incidents recorded are for boys, but there are a scattering of

girls that were caned from time to time.

The Master would, in all the cases in the table below, be Mr Walter Wetherell.

Corporal Punishment in schools was abolished by law in 1987. Though it would appear that the use of the cane at Bodsham School

was ended quite some time before the change in the law. The last entry in the book is in the early 1950s.
