Land Taxes for Hastingleigh 1780-1800

In 1780 King George III, being short of funds after several expensive international conflicts, ordered that
all Counties in the UK should be charged a Land Tax. It was then up to each county to divide the debt
between the Hundreds [Hastingleigh being in the Bircholt Hundred] and then each Parish within the hundred
had to pay a percentage, and each Land Owner [and occupier, in the case of the Rectory] had to pay.

The sum of Land Tax assessed for the Parish was twenty four pounds. At four shillings in the Pound.  This sum changed twice,
in 1798 and 1806. Eventually ending up at twenty five pounds and eight shillings. It also became possible to pay 15 years of Land
Tax in advance, and thus be exonerated from paying annually. Several landowners opted for this in the Parish
as can be seen in the records for Land Tax.

Twenty four pounds in old money was roughly equivalent to £30,000 at todays earnings. Quite a Tax burden for
a small Parish. By 1832 this was roughly equivalent to £20,000. So the Tax value did decrease over time.
If a man paid the Land Tax, the added benefit, was that this entitled them to vote in elections. Although there were women land owners and occupiers,
they were not permitted to vote throughout this time, and infact it was not until 1928 that women had equal voting rights to men.

These records are useful, for researching before the census recorded the names of all villagers, as it shows the heads of household, and can date when newcomers arrived in the village, and by cross referring the information with Wills, in some cases these lands were inherited, or passed on as part of
a marriage settlement. The assessors and collectors of the Land Tax, were usually the Gentry or Elders of the Parish, or of a neighbouring Parish.
Some of the pages are too damaged or faded to be transcribed, and a few are missing, nevertheless there is quite a lot of information for genealogists.

In 1780 - here are some of the equivalent sums of tax compared to current values:  £4.0.0 = £4970 / £4.12.0 = £5715 / £1.0.0 = £1242 /
16 shillings = £994 / 8 shillings = £497

Old money was split in to pounds, shillings and pence. One Pound has 20 shillings, and each shilling has 12 pence, making 240 pence in one pound
