ELMSTED or Elmstead is a parish and villlage 5 miles east of Wye station, 77 from London, 9 north-east of Ashford, in the lathe of Shepway, Stouting Hundred, and Elham Union, East Kent. The situation is lonely but healthy, lying on high ground. The village ontains a free school, supported by Sir Courtney Honeywood. It is within the diocese of Canterbury, and deanery of Elham. The church is an old and handsome building, consisting of a nave, two aisles and three chancels, dedicated to St. James, and containing various monuments. A fair is held annualy on the 25th July. Thee area of the parish is 2602 acres and in 1851 the population was 500.


BODSOM GREEN is 1 mile northwest, Evington half a mile north-west, Whatshall,or Watsall Street is half a mile south; Bavins, Wigmore Heath and Podlinge 2 miles north-east,; Dane or Dean Farm, Thong, Dowells, Eding and Sheepcote 1 and a half miles north-west; Pitbottom, Meeksted [Maxsted], Six Mile House and Limbridge Green, three quarters of a mile east; Eastlye Court 2 miles north east; Ashenfield, Hassell Street and pet Street 2
and a half miles north-west.


HASTINGLEIGH is an adjoining village and parish in Bircholt franchise, east Ashford Union. The church is very ancient and consists of two aisles and one chancel with a square tower steeple, and is dedicated to St. Mary. It is a rectory, consolidated with the vicarage of Elmsted, commuted value £233/7s; the Rev. Gostwyck Prideaux B.A. is incumbant. The area of the parish is 1498 acres and the population was 219 in 1851.

HASTINGLEIGH is a village and parish, 4 miles south east from Wye station on the Ashford and Canterbury branch of the South Eastern railway, 8 north east from Ashford and 75 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Bircholt Barony, lathe of Shepway, Ashford petty sessional division, East Ashford Union, Hythe County court district, rural Deanery of Elham and archdeacory and diocese of Canterbury.

The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, south aisle with an arcade of two arches, west porch and a tower to the west end of the south aisle containing one bell; the chancel is divided from the nave by an oak screen; there is a piscina in the chancel and in the south aisle, and a brass in the nave to John Halke ob.1604 and Anna his wife ob. 1596; the nave and aisle were restored in 1880 and the chancel in 1886, there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1730. The living is a rectory, consolidated with the vicarage of Elmsted, yearly value from tithe rent-charge L433 with 22 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of canterbury, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Anthony Collett M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge who resides at Elmsted. The principal landowners are the trustees of St. Thomas Hospital. The soil is various; subsoil chalk. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas, and hops. The area is 1515 acres, rateable value L1332; the population in 1871 was 231, in 1881 it was 229.
