Originally this stone was upright
and next to the pathway
to the church door,
but was moved in 2009
to cover an exposed  vault, nearer the Lychgate,
as the vault·s ceiling had collapsed.

COVENEY:

 

Floor stone partly in the
Vestry and partly in the south Aisle.

This is probably the grave of John Coveney, who dictates in his will that he wishes to be buried IN Hastingleigh church next to his wife. This would date the grave circa 1676.

005 TAPPENDEN:

The lighting of the Chancel was installed
In 1961 by members of the congregation and
parish of Hastingleigh in affectionate memory
of George Tappenden and in appreciation of his
work for many years as Churchwarden during
which period he did much to strengthen
the spiritual life of this parish.

This stone was on the South West
side of the church building, but
broke in to 3 pieces, the stump
remains in its original place, but
the two upper parts are now against
the North edge of the churchyard
lying flat and have a memorial
bench secured on top of it.

The damage is severe, but the stone is
still readable.
